"Springtime" by Jane Henson

Self-taught artist Jane Henson is a Seattle native who has lived creatively her entire life. Drawing and painting are fairly new to her repertoire. In 2014, on her 60th birthday, she stopped telling herself she couldn’t draw, bought paper and pencils and began drawing. What emerged is her creative expression that brings to life the joy, peace and love of nature she feels, while encouraging others to experience their own connection to the Earth.

“The natural world is my context and as witness to its staggering beauty and mysterious synchronicity, I know it is a powerful ally — one that allows me to be humbled and joyed, all at once,” she says.

Henson is one of the artists juried into the 2017 Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour and will be exhibiting her work at the studio of Paulette Hoflin, a bead artist.

The Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour is celebrating its 25th year of bringing artists and art aficionados together for a weekend-long, art-filled, free event. In this year’s tour, 27 local artists in 18 studios will be open to the public on Sept. 15, 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for artistic exploration and education.

Participating artists live and work in the Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula, Fox Island and South Kitsap areas. Meet the artists in person and learn how each one uses paint, ink, metal, wood, clay, stone, fiber, glass, found objects and other materials to create objects of beauty, whimsy and practical use.

The 2017 Greater Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour is a sponsored project of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, a charitable nonprofit organization. To learn more, go to gigharboropenstudiotour.org.
