It’s always a good day when you get to enjoy your hobby. But on those occasions when you get to share that hobby and put a smile on someone’s face — I have always found those to be the best days.

In years past, groups of auto enthusiasts would gather at a number of retirement centers and facilities and put on car shows for the residents. This was always very well received by the residents and made for a very enjoyable afternoon.

However, there is nothing normal about the year 2020 as the pandemic rages across this country. Hardest hit were the residents in retirement centers and care facilitates, since many were cut off from their normal access to visitors. The concept of social distancing ruled out the traditional car shows and would require a new approach.

This year’s touring season was decimated by the coronavirus, with every major car event in the country having been cancelled. When the email arrived detailing a rolling car show for a little boy who loved cars but had some significant health challenges, the response was amazing.

Having proved the concept, this became the forerunner for a number of similar outings. Various clubs toured facilities throughout Kitsap County — to the delight of the many residents.

The year 2020 will be forever etched in the minds of many as the year we overcame and adapted to provide just a little bit of diversity and maybe just a little smile to those who could use one.
