Contemporary Thrifting with Amy

Habitat for Humanity Store

basketsI recently bought these colorful storage baskets at Belfair’s Habitat for Humanity for $8. Not the best deal, but it’s not easy to find the utilitarian gems. And, of course, it also contributed to a cause.

Years back, the Habitat for Humanity stores seemed to focus only or primarily on utilitarian building supplies — doors, sinks, hinges, cupboards, etc. Years later, I noticed more frills like vases, dishware and nicknacks.

Local nonprofit thrift stores are an assist to our community. While at Belfair’s Habitat for Humanity, I asked store manager Nick Harris about their latest projects. He was very excited to share that they just finished building their 38th house. He said they also build, fix and repair porches and decks for those in need.

Have you ever regretted not buying something you saw in a thrift store? How about buying something you know you didn’t need or want or finding something on a shelf you can’t resist — only soon to realize you donated it last month?

Speaking of thrifting regrets and Habitat for Humanity, let me tell you a story. Twenty years ago, I walked in and saw a large — about 8-by-12-foot — rug hanging up high. It appeared to be a black-and-white Navajo weaving, similar to a small piece I owned called Twin-something. I love and collect Native American weavings, but for some reason passed up on the large Navajo woven piece.

Did I mention it was priced for only 50 bucks? I could have applied that ole’ saying, “Would have a space for it someday.” As we get older, that someday is now. Enjoy the thrifting venture.

Last week, I saw this fabulous, old, lidded Pyrex casserole dish, one I’d never seen before. For me, that is amazing since I used to run a Pyrex Museum with over 1,200 different pieces. Did I buy the Pyrex find? No. Why? Just wasn’t in the mood. Would I buy it if I saw it today? Yes!

But a few weeks ago, I did not pass up on these sweet, multicolor basket storage units. The clerk said that storage and organizing devices are quickly grabbed up.
