Exploring the Kitsap Peninsula National Water Trails
Manchester State Park
Manchester State Park

Perhaps the most defining feature of the Kitsap Peninsula is the 371 glorious miles of shoreline that skirt its small towns and dense evergreen forests. In the thousands of years that humans have been settling and exploring the peninsula, water travel has been the dominant mode of transportation. Although the reliance on transportation has shifted to road travel in modern times, water access and the ability to recreate, travel, fish and explore are still central to the identity of Kitsap and are a favorite activity for locals and visitors alike.

Officially designated as the first and only natural saltwater trail system in the United States in 2014, the Kitsap Peninsula National Water Trails (KPNWT) offers a unique opportunity to explore and experience the Greater Peninsula’s iconic natural beauty from the waterside. The KPNWT and its dozens of water trail access points encompass hundreds of miles of shoreline, providing adventurers with diverse ecosystems, wildlife viewing opportunities, unforgettable scenic vistas and access to welcoming waterfront communities.

On a typical water trails experience, it’s not uncommon to spot bald eagles soaring overhead; herons standing stoically among the tidelands; sea otters, seals and sea lions cruising the coast; and, if you’re lucky, a pod of orcas or grey whales.

The KPNWT offers year-round access to various water-related activities, including kayaking, standup paddleboarding (SUP), boating, scuba diving, fishing and wildlife viewing. The trail connects numerous public access points, parks and waterfront towns, making it an ideal experience for day trippers, adventurous locals and extended excursions.
