The South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce made history in April by hosting the inaugural Kitsap County Civics Bee, a competition aimed at engaging local youth in civic education. Thirteen bright minds from middle schools across the county took the stage to showcase their knowledge of government and community issues.
Participants faced two rounds of rigorous multiple-choice questions, while the audience eagerly joined in using their own devices.
Following the initial rounds, a panel of esteemed judges including Mayor Rob Putaansuu, City Council Member Gary Anderson and County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido delved deeper into the top five scorers’ understanding of civic matters through discussions on their submitted essays. Topics ranged from pressing local concerns like the need for a new high school, homelessness, park improvements, to addressing youth gun violence.
After thorough deliberation, Illyannie Gonzalez emerged as the regional champion, earning a well-deserved $500 grand prize. Her impassioned advocacy against gun violence caught the attention of Mayor Putaansuu, who even suggested a potential future in U.S. Congress for her.
Joining Illyannie at the state level competition on June 29 at the Kenneth J Minnaert Center for the Arts in Olympia are Elliot Bush and Josie Weis, both recognized for their exceptional performance.
The Civics Bee not only showcased the students’ knowledge but also highlighted their commitment to making a positive impact on their community, promising a bright future for civic engagement in Kitsap County.
