A ghost, the goddess of death, a jellyfish and World War II GI, and a gaggle of waterfowl are among the characters that strut the stage at this year’s Island Theatre Ten-Minute Play Festival, Aug. 18 and 19.
Now in its sixth year, Island Theatre’s Ten-Minute Play Festival features original short plays by Kitsap County playwrights. This year, out of 57 play submissions, 10 plays have been selected to be performed by Island Theatre directors and actors at Bainbridge Performing Arts.
The festival is recommended for ages 13 and above, as some plays include strong language and adult subject matter. All 10 plays will be performed at each of the three shows: “Bloody Mary” by Aleks Merilo, “Flight of the Valkyrie” by Noah Barfield, “Gel Us” by Paige Zubel, “Jellyfish Apocalypse” by Karen Polinsky, “Lessons Learned” by Jenny Weaver, “Memories of an American Occupation” by Paul Lewis, “Moving On” by Caroline Smith, “Of a Feather” by Wendy Wallace, “Roadsides” by Betsy Dorfman, and “Spreadsheet Me” by Jeffrey Brown.
Island Theatre’s previous Ten-Minute Play Festivals played to packed BPA houses. Besides the delight of seeing entertaining plays written, directed and performed by their friends and neighbors, audience members know that even if they aren’t crazy about one play, another is just 10 minutes away.
Now celebrating its 22nd anniversary, Island Theatre’s regular schedule includes bi-monthly staged play readings at the Bainbridge Public Library plus, in intervening months, potluck dinners in privately hosted homes where all guests are welcome to join in a selected play reading. Island Theatre is an all-volunteer nonprofit.
