Fall is harvest time and members of the Peninsula Fruit Club celebrate that in a big way. From Bainbridge Island to Gig Harbor, member growers bring and show the fruits of their orchard labor.
The group has two events each that are open to the public at the West Side Improvement Club on E Street in Bremerton: fall fruit tasting, which was hosted on a recent Saturday, and the Spring Grafting Show, which next year is planned for March 5, 2016.
If you have ever thought about growing fruit trees or other fruit plants, these are the people for consultation. In addition to 150 varieties of apples, club members share grapes and pears at the fall show. They understand that tasting is the key to growers being happy with orchard plants.
Pears will be an addition to my limited fruit tree collection and after a lengthy conversation about varieties that are disease-resistant, I learned that the bosc types are more successful than others in our rainy maritime climate. Others do better in the relatively dry Eastern Washington. This is the information we need to be successful in the home orchard.
The recent fall event included a friendly contest among club members for the largest apple and largest pear.
The Peninsula Fruit Club is a chapter of the Western Cascade Fruit Society and meetings are every second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Park Community Center on Lebo Boulevard in Bremerton. You will learn how to grow and care for fruit trees in Kitsap County.
