We have been blessed with a long, warm summer, but as fall (and winter) loom, it’s time to think about the home maintenance and improvements that are common for the season.
Furnace Service
Have a professional heating company check and service your furnace. You might have a specialized air filter installed too to help reduce allergens and dust.
You don’t want to be “that guy” whose furnace fails the week we have record sub-zero temps! This is an inexpensive item to prevent serious discomfort during the winter months.
Add a Generator Transfer Switch
A licensed electrician can add this or isolate certain circuits so that in the event of a power outage, you can supply power via generator to certain areas of your home. Let’s face it, there are spots in our area that loose power. It’s not just inconvenient during the winter months, it can get downright COLD!
Replace Your Roof
If you have an older roof, lots of moss or other issues, have your roof inspected and replaced if necessary BEFORE the rains start.
Roof leaks can be slow and hard to notice initially, but those same leaks can cause substantial damage. Take care of it now, before the damage is done.
Check the Caulking
Fall is a great time to check the caulking and replace as needed. Caulking can shrink and gap, allowing spaces for water to seep in and cause damage.
Interior Updates
With the holidays coming, company will be too. This is the time of year many people think about new carpet, flooring, countertops or paint. It seems like there is a lot of time left, but these trades get busy fast, so don’t wait to make those appointments and selections — get that work scheduled so that you have those nice finishes in time for the holiday events.
Taking these steps now will prevent most emergency calls this winter and waiting for a fix.
