Overview: The 2025 Mazda CX-90 is a handsome mid-size three-row SUV with room for seven or eight occupants. The sticker on our Premium Plus headed toward luxury SUV territory but the styling inside and out warranted the premium designation. Our tester had handsome 21-inch alloy wheels and Nappa leather trimmed seats that were part of the Premium Plus package. The PHEV feature was a welcome addition compared to the gasoline only CX-90 models.

2025 Mazda CX-90Walkaround: Mazda vehicles are known for their crisp, handsome styling that favors a conservative approach that keeps them looking fresh many years past their model year. We thought the CX-90 looked clean and athletic without being pretentious. The purposeful restraint adds luxury without crassness. Mazda styling works today and tomorrow which adds long term value.

Interior: Comfort, space, and style were all abundant in the CX-90 cabin. First row room and comfort were luxurious with quality that rivaled many more expensive SUVs. Legroom and headroom were very good. Captain’s chairs in the second row were a great place to sit on long trips. The biggest interior negative was the snug third row seating. Cargo space was good although less than some competitors especially when the third row seats are in use. A power liftgate was standard and foot-action activation was optional.

2025 Mazda CX-90Behind the Wheel: The CX-90 PHEV was very enjoyable to drive. It provides an excellent blend of performance, fuel economy, and comfort. The plug-in hybrid feature works great in a large mountainous state like Washington. You can cruise around town on electric power and you can also drive to Spokane without worrying about where to recharge. All-wheel drive is standard and always welcome in Washington. As three-row SUVs go the Mazda CX-90 is solidly on the athletic side of the segment.

Bottom line: We liked the 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV as we’ve enjoyed most Mazdas. The company makes nice, safe, attractive, good handling vehicles with tasteful semi-conservative styling. The CX-90 isn’t an exciting, can’t stop looking at it vehicle, but it is very handsome and an SUV we’d proudly take to any venue or environment.
