Overview: The 2025 Hyundai Tucson received a cosmetic refresh with very sharply defined lines along with a new grille, bumpers, and wheels. The XRT trim level is positioned as the most off-road capable but it seemed to be as much about style as substance. Forest Service dirt roads and wilderness fire roads — yes. Rock climbing, mud bogging — no.

Walkaround: Distinctive is an apt description of the Tucson XRT styling but we thought the seemingly random shapes, bulges, and panel creases were more busy than purposeful. We didn’t like the backwards/upwards sloped wheel arches even though they gave a sense of motion. We liked the unique wheels. The Hyundai Tucson stands out in a parking lot full of mostly similar compact SUVs.

2025 Hyundai Tucson XRTInterior: Our opinion of the Tucson XRT improved greatly once inside the spacious cabin. Front seat legroom was so ample we moved the seat up — not a common occurrence for 6’2″ drivers. The contoured leather steering wheel was great to hold and the auxiliary controls were simple and functional. HVAC controls used simple knobs — so much easier than accessing the infotainment screen. Power lumbar support was a bonus on the heated driver seat. Rear seat room was tall adult sized with a minimal floor tunnel. I fit fine in the middle position although the cushion was quite hard. Cargo space was large with a flat deck. Small item storage was generous.

Behind the Wheel: More power would have been nice but it was sufficient for relaxed freeway driving. For actual unpaved roads the XRT has a locking differential and hill descent. Handling was confident with a good steering feel. Highway and city streets driving experience delivered a welcome luxury vibe that exceeded the Tucson’s affordability level. Our best fuel economy of 30.2 mpg just beat the EPA estimate.

Bottom line: We actually liked driving and living with the 2025 Hyundai Tucson XRT but the styling just didn’t jell with us. The build quality and pleasant ride/road manners along with a quiet, roomy, comfortable interior made up for any cosmetic complaints. The overall Tucson experience was well above expectations for such a value-priced compact SUV.
