Overview

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is small and relatively impractical but once you mash the accelerator and get pressed into its snug-fitting bucket seats, practicality flies out the window. The tiny 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine pumps 300 horsepower and 295-lb.- ft. of torque to standard locking differentials and a rally-tuned suspension with all-wheel drive. The GR (for Toyota’s Gazoo Racing specialists) Toyota delivers near rally car fun in a safe, comfortable (for two), semi-practical, street legal hot hatch. Fun and driving enjoyment is the reason to buy a GR Corolla.

Walkaround

The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is loaded with fender flares, spoilers, scoops, three exhaust tips, blacked-out trim, performance wheels/ tires, and even a carbon fiber roof panel on the Premium Plus package — in other words, all the visuals expected on such a hot hatch. The looks fit the segment but the underlying features validate the flash.

Interior comfort is great up front but more for small adults or children in back. The steering wheel, paddle shifters, and other controls are driver oriented. Our tester had an excellent Head-Up Display which was very welcome. Things can happen quickly on twisty roads and you want your focus in front of you. Our tester had heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The JBL stereo system was fine and had a subwoofer. Rear cargo space under the hatch was OK but pack mule service isn’t why anyone buys a GR Corolla.

Behind The Wheel

This is where fun meets the pavement — the main reason anyone would want a hot hatch. The GR is available with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed paddle shift automatic. We drove the automatic and it was quick, crisp and easier to focus on driving rather than shifting. Various drive modes allow for custom power distribution based on driving conditions. Cornering prowess inspired confidence but the overall ride quality was smooth. The GR Corolla is also well suited for everyday driving and commuting. Its compact size fits any parking space.

Bottom Line

If driving is more than an A-to-B task the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is a car that elevates fun over function. GR Corolla styling is unique but not as over the top as some winged competitors. Interior quality and comfort reflect Toyota’s high standards. Fuel economy is reasonable if you practice go pedal restraint. The Toyota GR Corolla is overpriced compared to the standard Corolla, but all this fun isn’t free.
