Overview: The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid is the latest iteration of a perennial Pacific Northwest favorite. Subarus have always sold well here. They suit the region both geographically and philosophically — fitting well with outdoor activities and environmental responsibility. Subaru claims this new hybrid is capable of 40% better fuel economy than nonhybrid models. Its 16.6-gallon fuel tank is rated for 581 miles.
Walkaround: In a world of hulking sport-utility vehicles, the Subaru Forester seems almost petite, but it’s really just excellent packaging. It has a low step-in height and still clears 8.7 inches off the ground, with excellent approach and departure angles for any off-road adventure. Our Touring model featured a handsome, two-tone Black Silica roof over River Rock Pearl, which, along with tinted windows, gave it a lower-looking silhouette. Styling bulges and wheel-arch trim provided visual interest without being garish or exaggerated. Machine-finished, 19-inch multispoke alloy wheels gave the vehicle an upscale appearance.
Interior: The Forester offers excellent space, comfort and amenities. Front-row room is stretch-out — so much so that even a 6-foot-2-inch-tall driver may need to move up the seat. Rear-seat room is great, and the middle position is adult-sized, with a cushion that’s softer than most middles. The front seats are heated and ventilated, but only the driver gets power lumbar support. An excellent panoramic roof brightens the interior. Cargo space is very good, with 27.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 69.1 with the seat folded. The power liftgate can be activated by foot and features height memory. Small-item storage is on the small side, and the glovebox doesn’t lock. The overall interior quality, style, comfort and driver controls, as well as infotainment and safety features, are top-notch.
Behind the wheel: The 2025 Subaru Forester drives like a car, but it can go almost anywhere a four-wheel-drive truck can — and it’s much more agile in snow or on dirt trails. Plus, it fits in normal parking spaces. Off-the-line hybrid performance is surprisingly quick, even though combined horsepower is less than that of most hybrids. Power application is smooth and quiet. Fuel economy is impressive. We exceeded the EPA estimate with a best fuel economy of 36.9 mpg.
Bottom line: We were impressed by the performance, economy and value increases the new hybrid package gave the 2025 Subaru Forester. When you factor in equipment upgrades that come with the hybrid, purchasing is almost a no-brainer. The Touring edition adds a lot of luxury, but all Foresters are generously equipped and well-built.
