Overview: The 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD is the redesigned ninth generation of this highly successful and popular four-door sedan that’s now only available as a hybrid. The base LE model has front-wheel drive, but our top-of-the-line XSE came standard with all-wheel drive, which makes it an excellent all-weather sedan for the Pacific Northwest. Styling is somewhat familiar, but the redesigned front fascia is distinctive. The suspension has been reengineered, as were the seats. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard.
Walkaround: Styling is nose heavy, in our opinion. Lights and scoops are fine, but the big, wide grille seems to overpower the simple, sleek side profile. Our tester had handsome 19-inch wheels in dark gray metallic (a $1,500 option over the standard black 19-inch wheels). The new Ocean Gem color fit well with the local aquatic vibe. A great panoramic glass roof was part of the 4K Premium Plus Package.
Interior: Room for all is the interior theme, as it should be for an adult-friendly four-door sedan. The XSE interior is leather-trimmed, including the excellent, heated steering wheel. Ambient lighting is a nice luxury touch. Acoustic-laminated glass helps keep the cabin quiet. The heated and ventilated front seats with driver power lumbar are great on both short and long trips. Rear seat headroom is a little low. The infotainment screen is substantial at 12.3 inches. Our tester had the optional JBL Premium Audio System and an excellent head-up display.
Behind the wheel: The excellent, four-cylinder hybrid powertrain makes missing the previous V6 a nonissue. The extra rear motor for the AWD makes freeway merges easy and the sport mode really does add oomph and sportiness. Both the steering response and brake performance are excellent. All-wheel drive should be standard for Washington’s often wet and slippery roads and for anyone who traverses our majestic mountains. The CVT transmission is smooth and efficient. We matched the EPA economy estimate with a best of 44 mpg.
Bottom line: The ninth-generation 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD is another home run based on the continual refinement of an already fine vehicle. Making hybrid power standard suits these changing times, but doesn’t add the costs or range anxiety of all-electric vehicles. Our loaded XSE AWD tester was handsome, roomy, comfortable, economical, almost sporty and loaded with excellent technology and safety features that added to Camry’s reliability reputation — making the Camry a must-consider vehicle for anyone seeking a well-rounded sedan.
