Overview: The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is an all-new model that’s essentially a two-row version of the popular Mazda CX-90. This configuration is great for people who don’t need or want extra passenger capacity as much as more cargo space. The CX-70 follows the handsome Mazda styling that favors sleekness over excessive scoops and body cladding. There are two versions of the turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder (280 and 340 horsepower) as well as a plug-in hybrid.
Walkaround: The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a handsome vehicle with sharp 21-inch alloy wheels and 275/45R21 all-season tires. The high-opening liftgate can be operated via foot motion. There are rear-seat releases to ease cargo loading. The contemporary, slightly conservative styling fits the true use of the CX-70 — a family city and freeway vehicle. Mazda has tastefully ignored the overly clad faux offroad look for a vehicle that will probably never see terrain more challenging than snow or an occasional dirt road.
Interior: The Mazda CX-70 interior is one of its highlights. The theme and execution are more upscale luxurious than the price might suggest. Mazda interiors have always used a variety of colors and textures that are expertly combined to express refinement. Front-seat room and comfort are excellent. The outboard rear positions are great, but the center position can be snug for three adults. Our Premium Plus tester had a great panoramic moonroof, Bose stereo, power tilt and telescopic steering column, heated leather steering wheel and a 12.3-inch center display. The second-row seats were also heated.
Behind the wheel: The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a pleasure to drive. Mazda has always placed a strong emphasis on driving dynamics. Handling is sporty without being harsh. For a midsize SUV, the CX-70 is surprisingly athletic. It’s not a Miata, but not a dump truck either. The responsive, refined engine and excellent transmission can be fine-tuned via drive modes. The CX-70 has an impressive array of standard safety and driver-assistance features. Our only complaint was the new but odd electronic shifter.
Bottom line: The 2025 Mazda CX-70 3.3 Turbo S in Premium Plus trim is all-new and an excellent addition to the fine Mazda SUV lineup. It swaps third-row seating that not everyone needs for extra cargo space. The top 340-horsepower version of the turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six provided excellent performance that was matched by handling that’s much sportier than many competitors. A roomy, luxurious interior and handsome styling are big pluses.
