Overview: The 2024 Mazda MX-5 (commonly known as the Miata) RF is a classic example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Since its 1990 introduction, the Mazda Miata has remained a small, two-seater sports car with a very large fun factor. The 2024 iteration is a fourth-generation Miata and the eighth year of this present styling, which still looks fresh and sleek, especially in the optional RF (retractable hardtop) model that we drove.
Walkaround: The 2024 MX-5 Miata has been mildly updated with new headlights, taillights and alloy wheels. The car looks handsome from all angles and its low stance isn’t fully realized until you’re literally standing over it. In a world of ever-taller SUVs and pickups, the Miata is one step above a speed bump. The slick, retractable hardtop is ideal for the highly variable Pacific Northwest weather. It also provides a quieter, more secure feeling environment when up.
Interior: Small on the outside also means snug inside. Ingress and egress are a little yoga-like but once you’re in, the supportive leather seats are comfortable, with ample legroom. Headroom is just enough for tall people. Controls are well positioned and the excellent six-speed shifter falls readily to hand. Three-temp heated seats are great when the roof is retracted. Interior storage space is good if you only travel with a couple of packs of gum. Removable cupholders are awkward — we threw them in the modest-size trunk.
Behind the wheel: The driving experience is where the Miata shines. The MX-5 has a very high smiles-per-miles ratio. The excellent, six-speed manual transmission is slick and quick, with a satisfying snick-snick between gears. The clutch is excellent, as are the Brembo brakes. The 181-horsepower seems like more in such a light car. Backroads are something to seek but daily driving and freeway slogs are fine. The suspension is athletic but not overly jarring. The limited-slip differential has been upgraded for the Grand Touring trim.
Bottom line: The 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF packs a lot of fun in a very compact package. The retractable hardtop and upscale Grand Touring trim do much to civilize the experience without diminishing the fun. A fine, six-speed automatic transmission is available but the six-speed manual best suits the car’s personality. Interior storage is almost nonexistent but the trunk is OK for soft luggage. We enjoyed the MX-5 in all driving situations but twisty backroads generated the most smiles.
