Attention getter

Whines:

Vestigial “running boards” looked odd

Very stiff steering column adjustment lever

Could use more/larger interior storage bins

Limited trunk space

We didn’t think Dune package was worth extra cost

Bottom Line:

The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle Dune convertible is a special model (also available as a coupe) that’s meant to evoke classic “dune buggies.” The ride and track are slightly larger. Front and rear fascias have skid plate cues. Black side trim is supposed to conjure up traditional VW running boards. All this extra flair didn’t work on us, but the underlying Beetle convertible is a great car and lots of fun on back road weekend trips. Our recommendation: stick with the standard Beetle convertible and use the savings for fun getaways.
