Overview: The 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country is the only premium sedan boasting the same levels of capability as Volvo’s rugged Cross Country wagons. Offered in only one version — a well-equipped T5 AWD Platinum model — this new Volvo incorporates luxury, style, sophistication and safety in a unique, upscale package that delivers the same all-road capabilities introduced in the V60 Cross Country wagon last year, plus 7.9 inches of ground clearance.
Interior: The S60 Cross Country features leather seating surfaces on contour seats that provide excellent comfort and support. Interior enhancements include Shimmer Graphite inlays with Urbane Wood or Piano Black Wood inlays available as individual options.
The lengthy list of standard features includes push-button start; rear camera; HomeLink integrated garage door opener; 60/40-split rear seat, grocery bag holder; and all the requisite power devices — mirrors, seats, windows, etc. The Volvo Sensus system allows a high level of personalization, plus manages the standard Harmon Kardon audio, standard navigation and other information functions via a 7-inch, high-definition color monitor in the center console.
Behind the Wheel: On a trip from San Francisco to Bodega Bay and back, the S60 performed well — quiet, comfortable and surefooted.
Wow Factors: Standard Hill Descent Control uses the vehicle’s brakes and engine torque to crawl in low gear on steep downhill slopes. The driver can control the speed with the accelerator and/or brake pedal with Hill Descent Control engaged.
Whines: Three words: no paddle shifters.
Bottom Line: The new S60 Cross Country is the only truly capable — and stylish — all-road sedan on the market. Definitely worth your time.
