As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gears up to bring six matches to Seattle’s Lumen Field, the excitement is reverberating far beyond the city limits. For Kitsap County, this global event presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — one that Kitsap County Commissioner Katie Walters has worked tirelessly to secure. Under her leadership, Bremerton has been designated as an official FIFA Fan Zone, a move that will bring thousands of visitors to the region, driving economic growth and solidifying Kitsap’s place on the international stage.
Seizing a Historic Opportunity
Walters’ vision for Kitsap’s participation in FIFA 2026 began over a year ago when she attended a Seattle FIFA World Cup 2026 Local Organizing Committee (SeattleFWC26) briefing at Lumen Field. Seeing the scale of the event and the opportunity for Kitsap, she immediately recognized that the region’s maritime beauty, naval history and vibrant waterfront communities made it an ideal location for an official FIFA Fan Zone.
“Kitsap County is just a ferry ride away from Seattle, offering fans easy access to World Cup events while providing a uniquely Pacific Northwest experience,” Walters explains. “Our scenic waterfront, rich tribal and naval heritage and dynamic downtown areas make this the perfect place for visitors to celebrate.”
The iconic Washington State Ferry ride to Bremerton, often listed as a must-do for visitors to Seattle, adds to the appeal. “That 60-minute ride through Puget Sound isn’t just transportation — it’s part of the adventure,” she says.
How Kitsap Secured FIFA Recognition
Making Kitsap County an official FIFA Fan Zone was a strategic move. Walters and her team hosted representatives from FIFA and SeattleFWC26 to highlight the region’s potential. Community engagement was key — local governments, businesses and organizations came together, forming a task force to align resources and showcase Kitsap’s strengths.
“Collaboration was the foundation of our success,” Walters says. “From city leaders to small-business owners, we worked together to present a compelling case for why Kitsap should be part of this historic event.”
Local businesses, recognizing the potential impact, rallied behind the initiative, offering support and volunteering resources to help make the dream a reality.
A Transformational Economic Impact for Kitsap
With an estimated 750,000 visitors coming to the region for FIFA 2026, the impact on Kitsap’s lodging partners, restaurants and small businesses is expected to be profound. Hotels will see increased bookings, restaurants will welcome new patrons and shops will benefit from the influx of fans looking for local experiences.
“This is about more than just soccer — it’s about showcasing Kitsap to the world,” Walters says. “From Bremerton’s waterfront to Port Orchard’s festivals, Silverdale’s shops and Kingston’s historic trails, visitors will be immersed in what makes our region special.”
FIFA’s global reach is undeniable. More than 2 billion viewers will tune in during the tournament, bringing unparalleled exposure to Kitsap County.
What to Expect at the Kitsap FIFA Fan Zone
Bremerton’s waterfront and Quincy Square will come alive with excitement, featuring:
- Live match screenings on a massive outdoor screen

- Local food and beverage highlighting the best of Kitsap’s culinary scene

Visitors can also take a foot ferry to Port Orchard for the Fathoms O’ Fun street festival or board the historic Mosquito Fleet Carlisle II to Silverdale, learning more about the region’s naval and tribal heritage. The summer of 2026 also coincides with America’s semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — which Kitsap will celebrate with fireworks and the annual Bridge Blast fireworks show.
“We’re creating an experience that blends the global excitement of FIFA with Kitsap’s unique cultural and historical identity,” Walters says.
Accessibility and Community Involvement
Recognizing that the FIFA Fan Zone is for everyone, efforts are being made to keep the experiences affordable and accessible.
“This event isn’t just for die-hard soccer fans. We want families, history buffs and art enthusiasts to find something that excites them,” Walters says.
Building a Legacy Beyond 2026
While the FIFA World Cup will last just three weeks, its impact on Kitsap County will be long-lasting. The community enhancements, increased visibility and strengthened partnerships will pave the way for future events and tourism growth.
“This is just the beginning,” Walters says with a smile. “By putting Kitsap County on the global stage, we are opening doors to new opportunities for years to come.”
FIFA 2026 is set to be a game-changer for Kitsap County, creating an unforgettable experience and a lasting legacy for businesses, residents and visitors alike.
