Overview: The Hyundai Tucson is a crossover SUV that’s all new for 2022. Unassuming and utilitarian, it offers updated styling, a great warranty, plenty of standard features including decent infotainment, good fuel economy, room for people and cargo, and available all-wheel drive. The Tucson is Hyundai’s bestselling model globally and offers eco-focused powertrains and segment-leading technology, along with an array of powertrain variations including new hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Our test driver was the gas-powered, top-of-the-line Limited, and this review focuses on that vehicle.
Walkaround: Redesigned for 2022, the Tucson’s lines are smoothly curved, offering what Hyundai terms “sensuous sportiness design identity.” That may be a bit of hyperbole, but styling is attractive and the larger, all-new Tucson offers more passenger and cargo room. Tucson’s profile conveys forward motion, with a long hood and level roofline coupled with a long wheelbase and short overhangs. Crisp angles and edges create a contrast between the sleek silhouette and masculine lines. A chrome strip beginning at the side mirrors follows the roofline with increasing width until reaching the C pillar. In the rear, full-width taillights incorporate half-concealed triangular shapes that are clearly visible when illuminated. The Hyundai logo is integrated into the glass, and the rear wiper concealed beneath the rear spoiler.
Interior: Tucson’s interior, or “interspace” as Hyundai calls it, provides a feeling of openness where space, technology and information seamlessly blend. The interior offers three new technologies, including a 10.25-inch full-touchscreen and a digital gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Ambient mood lighting is adjustable to 64 colors in 10 levels of brightness. Soft-touch materials offer an overall premium ambiance. The leather-trimmed, front power seats with lumbar support are heated, cooled and comfortable. Tucson’s 60/40 second-row seats easily fold, with a release lever also located in the rear cargo area.
Behind the wheel: The ride is comfortable and the new Tucson is more agile than the previous generation, thanks to new e-handling systems that minimize traditional compromises between sporty handling and ride comfort. The 2.5-liter four-banger powers the Tucson sufficiently and the eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly.
Bottom line: The all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson does everything in a practical manner. It’s attractive, safe and spacious, with unintimidating technology and lots of value.
