Overview: The Ford Edge is a popular, midsized crossover slotted between the Escape and Explorer. In the fifth year of its second generation, the Edge boasts user-friendly driving dynamics. There are four models: SE, SEL, Titanium and the new ST — our test vehicle and the focus of this review. The 2019 Edge ST replaces the previous Edge Sport and gets numerous upgrades, including handling tweaks, 20 more horses for the twin-turbo V6, a new eight-speed automatic transmission and massive increases in safety technology.
Walkaround: Styling is reserved and deliberately unique to the Ford SUV line. Its good looks mimic some of the more popular global design themes while avoiding trendy ones, like floating roof panels. Its six-sided grille has a European flair, while black trim runs down the sills and the striking 21-inch gloss-black wheels stand out.
Interior: The upgraded cabin features tightly grained black plastic and brushed metallic trim. Ford’s latest Sync 3 infotainment system is way better than the previous MyFord Touch, and the best part is the return of knobs and switches, replacing the prior touch-swipe controls. Storage abounds, although not necessarily conveniently. The door pockets are deep but narrow. The same for the center console. Wireless phone charging is available. The ST sport seats are power-adjustable and hug the driver and the front passenger. The three-person, flat rear bench allows the middle passenger to slide across easily. With no third row, rear passengers enjoy excellent legroom, although the available panoramic roof reduces headroom when closed. There’s abundant space for five passengers and cargo, with 39.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 73.4 with it folded down.
Behind the wheel: The hot twin-turbo V-6 delivers 335 horses. The eight-speed automatic shifts quickly via paddle shifters and does the 0-60 drill in under six seconds. With independent suspension and well-weighted electric power steering, the Edge boasts a well-controlled ride, especially on twisty roads — with precise road feel, tracking crisply into corners and holding a tight rein on body motion over bumpy roads. Braking seemed a little touchy at first, but offers strong stopping power.
Bottom line: The handsome 2019 Edge ST performs strongly, handles well and powerfully competes against the best European and Japanese crossover sport-SUVs.
