It’s not easy to catch up to Tina Nguyen. She lives (for now) on Bainbridge Island. She owns Simon’s in Port Orchard, serving Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. And she recently bought the Rosedale Market in Gig Harbor, where she has plans to expand the deli menu to include Pho and spring rolls, among other […]
Alison Pride
Alison Pride is a Washington native who grew up east of the mountains and always longed for green. She moved west the first chance she got to attend college at Seattle Pacific University, where she majored in English and edited her college newspaper. Since then she’s lived as far south as Davis, Calif., and as far east as Bozeman, Mont., where she reported for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle and first started poking through people’s houses in order to write about them. Happy to be back in Washington at last (and on the right side of the mountains), Alison lives in Gig Harbor, where she does freelance writing when she isn’t out exploring one of the area’s great beaches with her son and dog in tow.
In Search Of The Perfect Bite
It was time to revisit Brix 25. A fine-dining staple of the Gig Harbor community since it opened in 2004, the restaurant has changed hands three times in its short history. In 2008, after being named Restaurant of the Year by the Washington Wine Commission, it was purchased by husband-and-wife team Thad Lyman and Katie […]
Remodeler Wayne Keffer Follows His Dream
It’s possible to drive right past the office of WRK Construction, Inc., even with directions in hand. Owner Wayne Keffer operates out of a white, metal-sided barn across from the family home in the Central Valley area of Silverdale, and the single-lane, unmarked dirt road off a two-lane country road leading there is easy to […]
Fly Fishing With the Reel Girls
The scene at Titlow Park in Tacoma attracts a few curious glances. Eleven women are spread out across the lawn, fly rods in hand, practicing their roll casts, false casts and presentation casts. The instruction this day is provided by Judy Graham, an energetic, patient tutor and expert casting instructor, who periodically calls the group […]
The Next Chapter: New Kitchen for a New Life
Cary Bozeman is officially retired and on sabbatical while he figures out his next move, but you’d never know it. On a recent day at the home he shares in Manette with his wife, Kerri, there is a just-out-of-the-oven, picture-perfect peach pie cooling on the stovetop, ready for that night’s fundraising auction for the Kitsap […]
Local Foodies Dish About Picnics
AMY IGLOI Amy Igloi is a well-known figure in the Port Orchard community. For the past seven years, she’s owned and managed Amy’s on the Bay, just steps from the waterfront in Port Orchard. What are your three favorite places for picnics on the Kitsap Peninsula? Belfair State Park, Scenic Beach State Park and Manchester […]
Capturing the Light — A Home to Match the View
From the beginning, it was a mismatch that invited the question: Why would you take one of the most jaw-dropping views on Earth and design a house that didn’t take advantage of it? Yet that’s exactly what Elizabeth and Bob lived with for 13 years after they bought their waterfront property (the couple asked that […]
House Party — The Murphy Family’s Forever Home
Some houses are best observed in motion. Take, for instance, the home of Sean and Shelley Murphy in Gig Harbor. Sean, a dentist, and Shelley, a former English and Spanish teacher, have four children ranging in age from 5 to 12, so a certain amount of frenetic activity is expected on a daily basis. Then […]
Making an Entrance
For years now, the garage has occupied a predominant place in American home design. Many homeowners don’t even use their front doors, opting instead to drive into the garage and enter the house from there or use a side door, bypassing the formal entryway altogether. Consequently, many homeowners miss not only a chance to make […]
