Town & Country Markets in Poulsbo is offering a paella cooking class from 5-7 p.m. on July 30.

Chef Kurt Strep, a food specialist at the company, will walk attendees through the steps for making the Spanish rice dinner dish, and wrap the experience up with a class community meal featuring nonalcoholic sangria.

Originally from the Valencian community in Spain, classic paella recipes vary by region, but most feature rice, beans (usually green or lima), saffron, and some type of meat (chicken, rabbit, and even snails) or seafood. The dish is named for the wide and shallow pan used to cook it — traditionally over an open fire.

In the spirit of regional variations, Strep’s from-scratch rendition for the class will feature seasonal ingredients and fresh seafood from the Pacific Northwest region.

In addition to the learning experience and dinner, attendees can take the flavors home with a complimentary bag of Bomba rice. Tickets are $55 a person. To learn more and get tickets, head here
