The Orcas Island Film Festival this week announced the lineup for its 12th annual outing.
Taking place from Oct. 14-18, the festival brings together 43 feature-length films from 15 countries, including 33 narrative features, three animated films, and 10 documentaries. The lineup includes projects from 18 women directors, a press release noted.
“This program captures what makes Orcas such a special destination for film lovers: audiences can discover the year’s most celebrated international films, major awards contenders, and singular new voices in an intimate island setting,” said Carl Spence, OIFF co-founder and co-director, in the release. “From the Palme d’Or winner and Sundance’s top prize winners to the top official Oscar submissions and an exceptional documentary program, this is one of the strongest lineups we have presented.”
This year’s festival kicks off with the John Turturro-starring “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York.” Other highlights include Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner ”Fjord,” starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve; Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award winner “Josephine,” starring Gemma Chan and Channing Tatum; and Cannes prize winners “La Bola Negra,” “The Dreamed Adventure,” “Everytime,” “Minotaur,” and “La Gradiva.”
The festival also features Cannes Best Actress winners in “All of a Sudden”; Telluride and Toronto favorites “The Debut” and “Elsinore”; Toronto hit “I Play Rocky”; Venice Opening Night selection “Ink” and Venice standout “Possible Love”; New York Film Festival Opening Night selection “Paper Tiger”; and Berlin Film Festival award winner “Rose.”
Documentaries are also featuring heavily at the OIFF, including Sundance U.S. Grand Jury Prize winner ”Nuisance Bear”; Cannes Best Documentary winner “Rehearsals for a Revolution”; two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple’s Venice-premiered “Union Town”; award-winning filmmaker Luke Lorentzen’s Venice selection “Boatbuilders”; and “Carl Sagan: We Are Made of Star Stuff” from Academy Award-nominated director Nanette Burstein. The nonfiction lineup also includes “The Endless Frontier,” “Humboldt USA,” “Landscapes of Memory,” “Once Upon a Time in Harlem,” and “Radioheart”: “The Drive and Times of DJ Kevin Cole.”
Many featured projects are international films also making their Orcas Island debut, such as Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “All of a Sudden,” Lukas Dhont’s “Coward,” Sandra Wollner’s “Everytime,” Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Fatherland,” Manuela Martelli’s “The Meltdown,” Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love,” and several others.
