Things to Do This Year at Heronswood

HeronswoodHeronswood, a renowned local treasure owned by the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, has many enticements on tap this year for gardeners from near and far. Don’t miss out on all there is to see and do there.

Friday Self-Guided Tours

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe and the staff at Heronswood invite the public to visit every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for self-guided tours of the gardens. The last scheduled time to enter the garden is at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person.

If you have a group that would like a prearranged, guided tour (with a member of the Heronswood Garden staff), the cost is $20 per person with a minimum of 10 people, or a $200 flat fee. Guided tours must be prescheduled. Contact Steve at 360-297-9620 to schedule a tour.

HeronswoodWeed, Walk and Talk

There’s no better way to learn about plants than attending the “Weed, Walk and Talk” hosted every month on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of the month. The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and begins with work in the garden under the direction of co-founder Dan Hinkley or another member of the Heronswood staff. There is no charge, but volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves, a preferred hand tool and a bagged lunch.

HeronswoodNew volunteers will be asked to sign a liability waiver and to provide an emergency contact before working in the garden. The work the volunteers perform requires the ability to kneel, bend, reach and have good balance, so volunteers must be good physical condition.

Groups from garden clubs and other clubs or societies also come in to volunteer at Heronswood. For more information about any of the volunteer opportunities or group volunteering, contact Shonna Sinclair, shonnas@pgst.nsn.us or 360-297-9624.

Garden Open Dates

Open dates for 2016 are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on these Saturdays: April 2, May 14, July 23 and Sept. 17. Each of these days features a host of local nurseries specializing in a wide variety of horticultural temptations (i.e. gorgeous plants). Stellar speakers and self-guided tours with docents stationed throughout the garden are also on tap.

HeronswoodThe garden opens are a good time to purchase a membership to support Heronswood. Get there early to snag favorite plants and then tour the garden and take in the speakers. Volunteers keep purchased plants in a holding area on these days, so you’ll have plenty of time to stay, tour and visit.
