The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the newest addition to Subaru’s lineup. It’s a traditional gas/electric hybrid and features a different powertrain than the previous plug-in Crosstrek.
Fans of both the hybrid and standard Subaru Crosstrek models are drawn to their subcompact city-friendly size, which includes all the standard safety and AWD features that have made Subarus so popular in the Pacific Northwest. The Crosstrek Hybrid is available in two trim levels: Sport and Limited. We tested the slightly more expensive Limited.

Walkaround
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is an agreeable- looking subcompact SUV that doesn’t go overboard on cladding and other “rugged” styling cues. The front and rear three-quarters views are simple. I didn’t care for the oddly shaped, flat-black “arches” over the wheel wells, and the unique 18-inch alloy wheels reminded us of a pinwheel toy. The sunroof was small. Doors shut with a solid sound and feel.
Overall, the build quality is excellent.
Interior
The emphasis on comfort, space, utility, and cargo capacity is exceptional given
the Crosstrek’s compact size. The interior reminds us of the popular Subaru Forester (which is a good thing). The pleasant contoured steering wheel was heated with ample auxiliary controls. The front seats were heated and supportive; the driver’s seat also had power lumbar support. The front seat’s legroom was ample, so we could easily move the chair forward to increase rear seat room. A large 11.6-inch infotainment screen was easy to use.
The only downsides were that the small item bins were skim and the glovebox didn’t lock.
Behind the Wheel
Driving the Crosstrek was pleasurable. The hybrid electric motors provide added acceleration — although their weight counteracts some of that benefit. There is 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which allows the Crosstrek to be quite agile on dirt trails despite its modest size. The Subaru X-Mode AWD system is good for snow, mud, and dirt. Safety features were impressive and include Subaru’s latest EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, Lane Departure, and Pre-Collision Braking aids.
Our best mileage average was 36.6 mpg, matching the EPA estimate.
Bottom Line
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid AWD subcompact SUV is a new addition to the already-impressive Subaru lineup. It’s small on the outside but roomy and comfortable on the inside. Its safety features are abundant, and fuel economy is good, but not as great as some competitors.
The Subaru Crosstrek is fun to drive on city streets, freeways, dirt trails, and in snow, which makes it a great all-around Pacific Northwest SUV.
