This October, the Washington Department of Ecology is teaming up with car washes across the state to distribute free, reusable car litter bags as part of its Simple As That campaign.

The campaign launched Oct. 1, with advertising happening statewide and partnerships with Auto Spa Car Washes in central Washington and The Wave Car Wash in western Washington. Customers can pick up a free litter bag at participating locations throughout October, while supplies last. The campaign’s mascot, Kevin the Marmot, is also helping spread the message through playful, informative instagram videos.

According to the Department of Ecology, not having a trash bag in the car is one of the top reasons people litter. Nearly 38 million pounds of litter ends up on Washington roads and public areas each year, while cleanup efforts cost about $17 million annually.

“People want to do the right thing, but when you’re driving, a trash can isn’t always nearby,” Washington Department of Ecology Director Casey Sixkiller said in a recent release. “A car litter bag gives drivers a simple way to manage their trash while on the road, helping keep our highways and communities clean.”
