Overview: The 2025 Honda Pilot is the automaker’s midsize, three-row SUV that’s essentially unchanged from the 2024 model. The base LX trim level was dropped and the upscale Black Edition added. We drove a Black Edition, which was actually a very handsome radiant red metallic. The Black Edition has all the deluxe features of the Elite trim and adds blacked-out exterior trim, 20-inch gloss black wheels and red interior accents. All-wheel drive is standard.
Walkaround: The 2025 Honda Pilot has smooth, contemporary styling with no unnecessary bulges or scoops. Black trim items are understated and the fit and finish excellent. The look is that of a refined luxury SUV and not a rock crawler. There are enough small scoops and bold rectangular exhaust outlets to make the Pilot interesting but not tacky. Pilot styling has a forward thrust that imparts a sense of motion.
Interior: Interior quality, style, comfort and space are all excellent Pilot features. The first two rows are spacious with stretch-out driver and passenger legroom. Even the third row can accommodate adults although it’s best suited to children. There is good cargo space behind the third row and a bin under the cargo deck. The panoramic moonroof on the Black Edition greatly brightened the whole cabin. Interior small item storage is excellent, with two-level door bins and a large console bin. Interior materials are very good, with heated and cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel.
Behind the wheel: The 2025 Honda Pilot has a wide array of drive modes but we spent all our time on paved roads, where the Pilot excels. We’ve driven Pilots offroad and they are confident and capable — but outside of winter passes or occasional dirt roads, most Pilots will see minimal monster truck activity. Honda’s legendary engineering excellence shines with the smooth and powerful V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission. Our overall fuel economy was 20-mpg, which is reasonable for this size SUV.
Bottom line: The 2025 Honda Pilot AWD Black Edition is a great family-friendly, midsize, three-row SUV. It’s smooth, comfortable, spacious and easy to drive. Functionally and safety-wise, it performs seamlessly. Hondas just work well (as expected) — it’s a Honda trait — and the Pilot follows that game plan. Pilots are somewhat conservative although the Black Edition adds style. Conservative, sensible, safe, reliable and a good value are all positive Honda Pilot traits. If you want excitement in a Honda, get a Civic Type R.
