Bainbridge Island-based author Susan Wiggs, whose penned more than 30 books, added one more to her repertoire this summer — a historical fiction novel titled “Wayward Girls.”

“Wayward Girls” is based on a true story and follows six teens from Buffalo, New York in 1968 amidst the unsettling Vietnam War era. The girls are confined to a Catholic reformatory where they are often condemned to forced labor and mistreatment. But despite their hardship, the girls find friendship, courage, and hope throughout their shared experience.

“I hope readers will linger over the complex choices the characters face, seeing reflections of their own lives (or their mother’s or grandmother’s lives) and friendships within the pages,” Susan Wiggs told West Sound. “May my girls bridge the gap between the fictional world and the very real bonds shared by readers everywhere.”
