April 22 is Earth Day, a global event that began in 1970 to help shed light on the importance of protecting the planet. There are simple, yet impactful, tweaks you can make at home to make a big difference to your space and contribute to the spirit of the day; here are a few suggestions.
Upcycle It
Before you throw away that glass baby food jar, old T-shirt, or cardboard toilet paper roll, reconsider and upcycle it all. Upcycling is finding new uses for things you might otherwise throw away. That glass baby food jar can hold paint or beads, salad dressing in your packed lunch, or paper clips in the office. A ripped-up T-shirt makes several soft rags for cleaning counters and stainless steel appliances. And that lowly toilet paper tube, or old egg carton, is perfect for spring seedlings.
Cleaner Cleaners
Natural cleaners are generally cheaper if you make them yourself, better for the planet, and better for the home. You can also opt to buy cleaners that are more eco-friendly. Vinegar and water can make an excellent window cleaner. Baking soda deodorizes garbage cans and refrigerators, and, when mixed with water to form a scrubbing paste, can remove stains from the bathtub. A cut lemon can remove odors from a cutting board. Essential oils might add scent without the chemicals. Swap reusable wool dryer balls with a few drops of lavender oil with dryer sheets for a natural laundry alternative.
Clear the Air
Indoor air pollution happens inside your home thanks to everything from dust and dirt to mold and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be released from paint, furniture, plastics and more. A great way to reduce pollutants in your home is to try to purchase low or no-VOC products when possible. Avoid tracking in dirt by removing shoes at the door. Replace HVAC filters; wash bedding; and make sure to mop, vacuum, and dust regularly. Add plants to your space that help clean the air, such as aloe vera and spider plants. Try “burping” your home, which includes opening doors and windows for 10–20 minutes most days to swap out stale air for fresh.
