Overview: The Mercedes GLE 450e 4MATIC was a new model for 2024 and has no major changes for 2025. As a plug-in hybrid it provides an excellent bridge for consumers wanting to test electric motoring with the range confidence provided by an onboard gasoline engine. Use electric power around town but be able to travel to the Oregon coast without searching for charging stations.
Walkaround: The Mercedes GLE 450e is a handsome, substantial mid-size SUV with subtle but iconic Mercedes badging. No one wants to pay Mercedes prices and be mistaken for an economy SUV. The “C” pillar and rear quarter glass have the established Mercedes styling cues. Handsome alloy wheels and all-season tires that are a good compromise between performance and functionality are pluses.
Interior: Opulent interiors have always been a Mercedes strongpoint. Quality materials with stylishly conservative design deliver that expected Mercedes experience. Driver and passenger comfort/space are excellent for long trips. Cargo capacity (31.5 cu-ft behind the seats and 75 cu-ft when folded) is ample. The panoramic sunroof greatly brightened the cabin.
Behind the Wheel: The combination of gas and electric motors provided quick acceleration with impressive torque. The smooth 9-speed transmission and all-wheel drive inspired all-season confidence. The highway ride is smooth with a light but responsive steering feel. Fuel economy was very good for such a substantial SUV. The electric range of 48 miles sufficed for most daily errands. The onboard charger replenished the battery in about 2.5 hours.
Bottom line: The 2025 Mercedes GLE 450e 4MATIC Plug-In Hybrid is a great way to test out the electrified future without all the attendant range anxiety and charging station searching issues. All the expected Mercedes engineering, safety, comfort, and quality are standard.
